The tourism that brings couples to the province of Siracusa is slow and made of stone: ancient theatres, limestone alleys, baroque towns. It goes well with the wish for silent evenings, provided you choose carefully where to sleep. The catalogue gathers thirty-eight properties here, between Siracusa, Noto and Noto Marina.
Ortigia, the island where it is worth sleeping
The ancient centre of Siracusa is on Ortigia, an island of narrow streets and squares linked to the mainland. It is the finest part and also the most lived-in: full in the evening hours, silent early in the morning. Anyone after quiet looks at rooms on the inner streets, not those facing the squares with the bars.
The Neapolis and the archaeological sites
The Neapolis archaeological park holds the Greek theatre and the Roman amphitheatre and is the city's main visit. It should be done early in the morning, because there is little shade and in summer the heat is severe. During the season of the classical performances the Greek theatre hosts shows again, and the city fills up accordingly.
Noto, Vendicari and Fontane Bianche
Outside the city the territory offers two directions: the golden stone of Noto, reached by car, and the coast, with beaches like Fontane Bianche and the Vendicari nature reserve, where the landscape stays wild. The useful season is long, from April to well into October, and the shoulder months are when the province is best visited. They are also the months when it is most realistic to find a place in a property reserved for adults, which here as in the rest of Sicily remains a minority offering.
