Noto is visited in a few hours and lived in well over several days: the whole difference lies in the moment you look at it. At midday it is full of day visitors, at dawn and after dinner it belongs to those who sleep there. The catalogue gathers fourteen properties here; the others in the province of Siracusa are in the provincial capital and in Noto Marina.

The golden stone of the baroque centre

The historic core is a compact example of Sicilian baroque architecture, with the cathedral of San Nicolò and the Palazzo Ducezio among the main buildings. It is walked along a central axis, among staircases and views that change a great deal with the light. Late afternoon is the hour when the stone gives most, and it is also when the organised groups have already left.

The sea to the south: Vendicari, Calamosche, Isola delle Correnti

The nearby coast offers some of the least built-up beaches in Sicily, from those of the Vendicari nature reserve to Calamosche and the Isola delle Correnti. They are places that require a bit of walking and that for precisely that reason stay quieter, at least outside the August weekends. Facilities are minimal: it is worth bringing water and something for shade.

A note on the calendar: the Infiorata fills the town and changes the rhythm of the days completely. It is a spectacle, but if you are after silence it is worth checking the dates and choosing another week. For the rest, spring and autumn are the seasons when Noto most resembles the idea people have of it.
