The province of South Sardinia takes in most of the island's southern municipalities, excluding Cagliari, and it is a territory a couple can cross slowly: long coasts, islands reachable by ferry, mining villages inland. The catalogue here is narrow, eighteen properties only, in Arbus, in Carloforte and in Villasimius, all checked by our editors against the site's criteria, that is the ban extended to the whole property or limited to the wellness area.
Arbus, Carloforte and Villasimius, three very different bases
Carloforte is on the Isola di San Pietro and is reached by sea: it is a village with a history of its own, and the island naturally filters passing tourism. Arbus looks onto the Costa Verde, further north on the same western side, and offers another idea of a holiday, made of dunes, long beaches and few services. Villasimius is on the other side instead, on the island's southern shore. Eighteen properties in such a large province means little choice, but also that anyone after quiet does not have to sift through dozens of alternatives.
From San Pietro and Sant'Antioco to Porto Pino
The southern stretch of coast is what makes the journey worthwhile. The islands of San Pietro and Sant'Antioco, with the little harbour of ancient Sulky and its coves, open the sequence; Porto Pino, edged with Aleppo pines, oaks and junipers, the Capo Teulada area with Tuerredda and, further east, Cala Cipolla continue it southwards. The lighthouse of Capo Spartivento and Baia Chia complete the picture.
Iglesias, Costa Rei and the months when there is nobody
Inland Iglesias tells the mining and medieval history of the area among mines and old churches; on the other side Costa Rei, Capo Ferrato and Muravera close the eastern shore. Baia Chia is crowded in summer but used by surfers in winter too, and that says something useful: in this province low season is not wasted time, it is the moment when the beaches empty again.
