In the northern part of Sardinia couples' tourism has a long tradition, and it shows in the number of hotels that have chosen not to take minors. In the province of Sassari the catalogue gathers forty-seven properties, the highest number on the island, spread between the western coast and Gallura. Each has been checked by hand: for each the page states whether minors are barred from every area or only from the wellness area.

Forty-seven properties between Alghero and Gallura

You will find them in Alghero, Budoni, Cannigione, La Maddalena, Loiri Porto San Paolo, Palau, Pittulongu and Porto Rotondo, as well as in Santa Teresa di Gallura. They are two different worlds. Alghero, on the western coast, is a town with a Catalan-marked old centre and a life of its own all year. Gallura, to the north-east, is made of marinas, coastal hamlets and archipelagos: more seasonal, quieter outside the warm months.

Western coast or north-east: how to choose

The practical difference is this. If you want to walk in the evening, eat out without taking the car and alternate sea and sightseeing, the Alghero area is more convenient, because the town works out of season too and the services do not close with the end of summer. If instead you are after water above all and little else, the north-eastern coast offers coves, islands reachable by boat and small hamlets where the evening ends early.

Sassari town, the hinterland and the right months

The provincial capital lies away from the sea and has an old centre, a medieval cathedral and a covered market of local produce, cheeses, wines, spices. Inland start walking, horse-riding and mountain-bike itineraries. The rule on timing applies to the whole province: in the central summer months the northern coast fills up, while in spring and early autumn it becomes a quiet destination in every sense.
