Alghero is a town and not a beach resort, which for a couple's holiday changes a great deal: you can walk to dinner, find something open out of season too and not depend on the car. The catalogue gathers twenty properties here, the highest number among the municipalities of the province of Sassari, all checked by our editors against the site's two criteria.

The Catalan centre, walked in the evening

The architecture of the old centre carries the mark of Spanish rule and of the town's long seafaring tradition, and with it a linguistic and cultural heritage that in Alghero is still alive. The Tower of San Giovanni, the archaeological museum and the diocesan museum are visited in the course of a day. In the evening the centre livens up a good deal: if you sleep inside the walls reckon with voices until late, while a property just outside gives you silence and still leaves you within walking distance.

Lazzaretto, Maria Pia, Le Bombarde and the Neptune's Grotto

The coast around the town alternates sandy beaches and sheer cliffs. Lazzaretto, Maria Pia and Le Bombarde are the best known, and therefore also the fullest in the warm months; smaller coves and islets stay less used instead. Anyone who dives has the Capo Caccia marine protected area and the Neptune's Grotto available.

At the table Alghero cooking works heavily with fish, with bottarga and pane carasau among the classics. On timing the advice is clear: Alghero works outside summer too, because it is a town that does not close, and in spring or autumn the same property without children gives you back a silent town instead of a crowded one.
