The south of Sardinia works well for a couple's holiday, on one condition: choosing carefully where you sleep. The best-known beaches of the province of Cagliari are also the busiest, and in the central summer months the difference between a week of rest and one of noise is almost always made by the hotel. In this province the catalogue gathers thirty-three properties, verified one by one: for each the page states whether minors are barred from every area or only from the wellness area.

The thirty-three properties and the municipalities they are in

They are spread between Cagliari, Castiadas, Pula, Quartu Sant'Elena and Villasimius: the provincial capital and four places on the island's southern shore. They are two different ways of understanding the same trip. In town you find the old centre, the museums and the port, and the evening carries on out of season too; on the coast you find silence, but only if you choose the right period.

Poetto, Costa Rei and Villasimius: the coast that fills up

These are the best-known stretches and in summer it shows. The Poetto is the town beach of Cagliari and Quartu Sant'Elena, so it lives all year, but in the warm months it becomes very busy. Villasimius and the Costa Rei area, towards Castiadas, attract anyone after pale sand and shallow water. If noise weighs on you, a hotel set back from the seafront and a beach reached early in the morning or in the late afternoon are the way to go.

Nora, Monte Arcosu and the less crowded months

The province is not only sea. In Pula there is the archaeological site of Nora, with its paved streets, baths and Roman theatre looking onto the water; inland the WWF oasis of Monte Arcosu, behind the gulf, opens paths through the Mediterranean scrub. They are visits that give more in spring or early autumn, when the heat drops and the coastal towns go quiet again. It is also the period when a property without children is really felt, because the quiet you pay for is found outside the room too.
