The Marche is the region chosen by anyone wanting the Adriatic without the machinery of mass tourism. Anyone looking for a hotel without children here already starts with an advantage: the rhythm is lower everywhere, even in full summer. The Marche properties we have checked are twenty-two, spread across four places: Pesaro, Gradara, Grottammare and Monteprandone. Few, but they cover both the coast and the hill country.

Coast and hills: two different holidays

Pesaro is in the north, where the shore meets the San Bartolo headland, and it is a real town that works out of season too. Grottammare is further south, on the Piceno riviera, with an upper village separate from the seaside part: anyone wanting silence in the evening finds it by climbing.

Monteprandone and Gradara are the other face of the region, that of hill villages among fields and vineyards. Here people do not come for the beach but to walk, to drive slowly and to eat without booking weeks ahead. In August it is the choice that spares you the worst part of the Italian summer.

Coast in August, hills in the shoulder seasons

The Marche riviera fills up above all in August, with a largely family tourism. June and September offer the same sea with far fewer people and lower rates. For the hills the opposite applies: spring and autumn are the best moments, when the landscape changes colour and the days stay long enough to be outside.

What we check before adding a hotel

On every page you find the distinction no big booking agency shows you: on one side the adults-only hotels in the full sense, where minors enter no area of the property; on the other those that welcome families but reserve only the wellness area for adults.

In Italy, outside the alpine arc, the second arrangement is anything but a given: in most spas children go in with their parents. Knowing in advance which of the two policies the property you are looking at applies is the whole point of this directory, and the reason why every entry is verified by hand by our editors. Among the twenty-two Marche addresses there are country arrangements too: if they interest you, look at the category bed and breakfasts, holiday homes and farm stays.
