Sleeping on the hills and going down to the sea when you feel like it is an arrangement that works well in the Maremma, and Scarlino is one of the villages that allow it: an old stone centre behind, the Tyrrhenian in front. For a couple it means being able to choose each day what kind of holiday to have. In this municipality of the province of Grosseto the catalogue has one property, checked by hand against the site's two criteria.
The Rocca Pisana and the walls of the village
The old centre keeps traces of its medieval past among walls, palazzi and churches. The Rocca Pisana dominates the village and opens the view over the surroundings, while the church of San Donato is an example of Romanesque architecture and remains of the old Etruscan walls are still visible. It is a small centre, walked in an hour, which stays quiet in the evening: one of the reasons it is worth sleeping here rather than on the shore.
Cala Violina and the Maremma park
The municipality's coast alternates beaches and hidden coves, and Cala Violina, with its very fine sand and clear water, is the best known. The Maremma nature park, further south beyond the provincial capital, opens the walking part of the holiday instead, with paths and country little touched by building.
Local traditions concentrate in events held through the year, from the medieval festival in summer to the festival devoted to wild boar: fine to see, to be avoided if you are after absolute silence. At the table you find ribollita, pappa al pomodoro and bistecca alla fiorentina, with Morellino di Scansano and the area's extra virgin olive oil.
