A couple choosing Catania reckons with two things: a lively, noisy city and Etna within a day's reach. The compromise works if the hotel gives back the calm the city takes away. In the province the catalogue counts one property, in the provincial capital; the nearest are in the province of Messina and the province of Siracusa.
The baroque of the centre and Catania nights
The old centre is compact, with Piazza del Duomo, the cathedral of Sant'Agata and the Teatro Massimo Bellini a short distance from one another. It is also the area where the nightlife concentrates: bars open late, tables outdoors, constant movement. If you sleep here ask for a room that does not face the bar streets; if you prefer silence, consider the areas just outside the old core.
Etna as a day of its own
The volcano is why many choose this province. The excursions leave early and require proper clothing even in summer, because as you climb the temperature drops a good deal. It is a whole day, to be planned separately and not squeezed in at the end of a trip.
Markets, pasta alla norma and seasons
Catania cooking is best tasted in the markets and the neighbourhood trattorias rather than in the restaurants on the main street: pasta alla norma, arancini, almond sweets. On timing, the Sicilian summer is long and very hot in the city, while from April to June and from September to November the climate is ideal for walking and visitor numbers drop. For couples those are also the months when it is easiest to find a place in a property reserved for adults, a category that in Sicily remains thin on the ground.
