Description

The Hotel Capricorn is at Riedstrasse 45, in Zermatt, in Valais. The village is closed to traffic; the Booking page counts five hundred and fifty metres on foot from the valley station of the Sunnegga funicular and warns that the route from the railway station to the hotel can include steep stretches, advising a taxi with heavy luggage, because the house runs no transfer service.

On this property the two sources contradict each other on a big point, and this page says so openly. The Booking page, read twice with and without a child in the search, writes in the children's conditions "Children are not allowed", and yet on the same page it lists among the highlighted facilities the availability of family rooms, asks in the important information "If you are travelling with children, you are required to inform the property in advance of their number and age" and specifies that "The spa area, including the whirlpool bath, is reserved for adults only (over the age of 14)": a sentence that would make sense only if there were younger guests in the hotel.

The property's website resolves the doubt and prevails, because it is the primary source. Among the room categories there is the Familien Suite of about thirty-five square metres for two or four people, presented with a line that leaves no room for doubt, "Die Familiensuite ist perfekt für eine Familie mit Kindern", and measured on another page as "ca. 35m2, 2-4 Personen (+1 Kind)". Confirmation also came from the house's own booking engine, which has a counter for children with their ages and which, queried with two adults and a child of eight for two midweek nights in January, answered with rooms and prices. The Booking ban therefore applies to that channel, not to the house.

The age to keep in mind here is the one for the wellness area, and the website publishes it in two places. The wellness page writes, under the opening hours, "Zutritt: ab 14 Jahre", and the rooms page repeats it in the list of what is included in the price: "Entspannte Momente in unserem Spa (Zutritt ab 14 Jahren, 16.00-19.30/20.00 Uhr)". The hours given are the opening times of the spa, from 16 to 19.30 in summer and from 16 to 20 in winter, not a window open to children: no day and no time band is open to the youngest, so the exclusivity is never interrupted. And the reserved area is the whole wellness offering of the house, because a second area for families does not exist.

Inside, the property lists the Finnish sauna at seventy-five degrees with a view of the garden and scented water poured on the stones, the bio infrared sauna at fifty degrees, the outdoor whirlpool at thirty-six degrees with jets and a view of the garden, the steam bath, the lounge where tea is served, the quiet room with loungers and the massage room, reserved for hotel guests only and on request. In summer the garden with sun loungers is added. Entry is included in the room price for hotel guests and no booking is needed; the house also sells evening and private packages to outside guests.

The rule on swimwear is not stated by either source, so this page does not write it.

Also included in the room price, the website says, are the breakfast buffet, the self-service coffee machine in the lounge open twenty-four hours a day, the ski storage with boot warmer and lockers, the free connection throughout the house and a fridge and a microwave available to everyone at any hour.

Booking, used here as the fallback source, confirms the address Riedstrasse 45 in 3920 Zermatt, rates the house three stars and states that pets are allowed on request, with the possibility of a surcharge. The same page reports construction work nearby between 07:00 and 19:00, with possible noise in some rooms: this is information that ages, read on 27 October 2026, and it is worth checking again before travelling. The minimum age of eighteen that Booking gives for check-in is standard booking portal wording and is not the rule of the house. In neither reading does the wording "Adults only" appear.

Frequently asked questions

Are children allowed in the hotel?

Yes, even though the Booking page says the opposite. The property's website sells a Familien Suite of about thirty-five square metres for two or four people, presented as "perfekt für eine Familie mit Kindern", and the house's booking engine has a counter for children with their ages: queried with two adults and a child of eight, it answers with rooms and prices. The Booking ban applies to that channel, not to the house.

From what age can you enter the spa?

From fourteen. The wellness page writes "Zutritt: ab 14 Jahre" under the opening hours, and the rooms page repeats it among the things included in the price, "Entspannte Momente in unserem Spa (Zutritt ab 14 Jahren, 16.00-19.30/20.00 Uhr)". The Booking page confirms the threshold too, writing that the spa area, whirlpool included, is reserved for adults over the age of fourteen.

Do the hours from 16 mean that children come in before then?

No. From 16 to 19.30 in summer and from 16 to 20 in winter are the hours in which the spa is open, not a reserved window: before that time the area is closed to everyone. There are no days or time bands in which children may enter, and a second wellness area for families does not exist.

Do you wear swimwear in the sauna?

The property does not state it. Neither the website nor the Booking page publishes a rule on swimwear in the sauna, so this page does not write one: it is best to ask at reception.

Are pets allowed?

Yes, on request and with the possibility of a surcharge, as the Booking page writes. The property's website publishes no rule of its own on pets.
