Description

The Castel Sallegg Suites occupy the Leisenhof, the second closed farmstead of Caldaro, at via Molini 1A, in the heart of the village: the building looks onto piazza Rottenburg and stands at the foot of Castel Sallegg, on the edge of the Leisenpuiten, a vineyard of four and a half hectares enclosed by a wall. A gate lets guests cross the rows on foot to reach the centre. We are at around 425 metres above sea level, on the South Tyrol Wine Road, a few minutes from Lake Caldaro. The property belongs to the counts von Kuenburg, who have been making wine here since 1851: the hotel is one of the three souls of the estate, together with the cellar and the Vineria.

There are no more than fifteen rooms and suites and they are spread over three floors of the restored farmstead, all looking onto the vineyards, the village, the lake or the mountains. The categories run from the Nobilis of 28 square metres to the Magnifica of 31 and the Magnifica+ of 41, then Serenis of 45 and Serenis+ of 48, the Altissima Terrace rooms of 35 and 47 square metres with their own terrace, up to the three Spa Suites: Majestas of 50 square metres, Majestas+ of 60 and Imperialis of 76, all with a terrace and with a private spa inside the room. All the accommodation is for two people, and the furnishings mix contemporary luxury with pieces from the family collection.

It is worth being precise about the wellness side, because this is not a classic hotel spa. There is only one pool and it is outdoors, in the garden in the shade of a walnut tree, with lawn and a sun terrace around it; the property describes it as seasonal, so it should not be taken for granted in winter. There is then a spa area with a sauna, which the house places a few steps from the estate. No shared Turkish bath is listed and the property does not publish a list of massages or treatments. Anyone who wants wellness inside the room has to choose one of the three Spa Suites. A private loggia and a lounge complete the shared spaces.

Breakfast is included and is served to house guests only. La Vineria del Leisenhof, at the same address, is both a wine shop and a bistro and is the starting point for the guided visits and tastings of the estate: it opens from Monday to Saturday from 10 to 20, and on Thursday until 22.

On the question of age the sources differ and this page follows the property. The official site, in its useful information, writes that rooms and suites are reserved exclusively for people aged sixteen or over. The booking portal states instead that children are not allowed and that the minimum age for check-in is eighteen. The figure given above is the hotel's own, sixteen years. Anyone travelling with a sixteen or seventeen year old has a written statement from the house to rely on, but it is worth asking for confirmation before booking, because on the portal the threshold remains higher.

As for the rest: dogs and other animals are possible only by prior agreement, with a surcharge of 40 euros. The house is non smoking and smoking is allowed only on the terrace. Check-in is between 15.00 and 18.00 and check-out by 10.30. Reserved parking is in the immediate vicinity and there are two 14 kW charging points at 0.60 euros per kWh. Cancellation is free up to fourteen days beforehand.

It suits anyone looking for a small, historic house inside a wine village, with the vineyard below the windows and the family cellar a few metres away. It suits less anyone who wants an indoor pool, an elaborate sauna circuit or half board.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can you stay at the Castel Sallegg Suites?

From sixteen, according to the official site, which under the heading Adults only writes that rooms and suites are reserved exclusively for people aged sixteen or over. The booking portal reports instead that children are not allowed and that the minimum age for check-in is eighteen. This page keeps the property's figure, but given the difference it is worth asking for the threshold to be confirmed in writing.

Is the pool indoors and open all year?

No. It is a single pool, outdoors, in the garden in the shade of a walnut tree, with lawn and a sun terrace around it, and the property describes it as seasonal. For a stay out of season it is worth asking for confirmation that it is open. No indoor pool is listed.

What does the wellness side include?

A spa area with a sauna, which the house places a few steps from the estate, as well as the garden pool, a private loggia and a lounge. No shared Turkish bath is listed and the property does not publish a list of massages or treatments. Three of the rooms, the Majestas, the Majestas+ and the Imperialis, have a private spa inside the room.

Can you bring a dog?

Yes, but only by prior agreement with the property, which asks for a surcharge of 40 euros. The booking portal reports the same condition, that is pets allowed on request with a possible surcharge.
