Description
The Alpenhotel Karwendel of the Rödlach family is at number 18 Ostbach, one of the scattered hamlets that make up Leutasch, the long village of the valley of the same name in Tyrol, at 1,136 metres of altitude between the walls of the Wetterstein and the profile of the Hohe Munde, a step away from Seefeld. It is a valley of meadows and farmhouses, with the Gaistal behind the house, and the altitude makes itself felt: the property cites it as an argument for anyone who suffers from allergies. In winter the Leutasch-Seefeld region provides 280 kilometres of cross-country trails, free for guests.
Adults only, from the age of 14
The booking portal confines itself to saying that children are not allowed. The official website does write the figure, on the page listing the reasons for choosing the house: the minimum age for staying at the Wellnesshotel Karwendel is fourteen. The same threshold therefore applies in the wellness area as well, which the hotel calls, without mincing words, an adults-only spa. This entry reports 14 years, the figure declared by the property.
Two thousand square metres of sauna and water
The wellness area is split into two worlds. The Garten.Spa, Mediterranean in character, includes an atrium with a drinking-water fountain, the organic hay sauna, the Tyrolean Bergkristall sweating room, the saline steam bath, the Kneipp shower and the bucket shower, a vital buffet and panoramic rest rooms; in the garden there is the natural bathing pond, with loungers around it and a view of the woods. The Wellness.Lounge, on three floors, adds the Sole.Lounge, the infrared sauna and a separate infrared cabin, a steam bath of modern design, the Finnish sauna with steam infusions, the experience shower, a wellness library with a buffet, and the Kuschel.Lounge and Sky.Lounge rest rooms. On the ground floor of the Wellness.Lounge is the panoramic pool: seventy square metres at 30 degrees, with an indoor and an outdoor part that connect, built-in whirlpool loungers and an open view over fields, woods and the Hohe Munde. The house was awarded one of the Relax Guide's roses in the Spa Award 2026 and has obtained the European Ecolabel and the Austrian environmental mark. On the rule for swimwear in the sauna the website says nothing, so it is worth asking before setting off. The wellness package with a bathrobe and a bathing bag is in the room, and late check-out with use of the spa until 15.00 is included.
Rooms, table and dog
The accommodation ranges from the single to studios and rooms of 20 to 40 square metres, in traditional style, with a large bathroom, safe, minibar, satellite television and wifi; some have a sofa or a sitting corner, in a few cases with a tiled stove or a fireplace. Nearly all face west onto the garden or east onto the woods, and all have a balcony. From three nights upwards three-quarter board applies: breakfast, a light lunch, an afternoon snack and a choice of menu in the evening, with a questionnaire at check-in that serves to choose the dishes according to your own energy type. On every floor there is a buffet with hot teas and apples available. There are the gym, a weekly programme with yoga, stretching and meditation, the massage department and, in summer, golf, with an offer and an academy of its own. The dog is welcome, with a welcome package in the room, towels at the entrance, bags at reception and, since 2025, a fenced agility course a hundred metres from the hotel. It must always be on a lead in the hotel grounds and stays away from the lounger areas, the pond and the pool, with the exception of the meadow around the hut.

Frequently asked questions
From what age can you stay at the Alpenhotel Karwendel?
From the age of 14. The booking portal says only that children are not allowed, with no figures; the official website writes that the minimum age for a stay at the Wellnesshotel Karwendel is fourteen, and the same threshold applies in the wellness area.
What does the wellness area include?
Two thousand square metres divided into two worlds. The Garten.Spa has an organic hay sauna, the Tyrolean Bergkristall sweating room, a saline steam bath, Kneipp and bucket showers, a vital buffet, panoramic rest rooms and the natural bathing pond in the garden. The Wellness.Lounge, on three floors, adds the Sole.Lounge, an infrared sauna and cabin, a steam bath, a Finnish sauna, an experience shower, a library and the Kuschel.Lounge and Sky.Lounge rest rooms, as well as the panoramic pool of 70 square metres at 30 degrees.
Do you wear swimwear in the sauna?
The property publishes no rule. The website lists in detail all the cabins of the two sauna worlds but does not say whether you go in dressed or wrapped in a towel. In the room there are a bathrobe and a bathing bag with the sauna towels; for the rule it is worth asking the property.
Can the dog come?
Yes. The house devotes a welcome package in the room to it, towels at the entrance and bags at reception, and since June 2025 it has had a fenced agility course a hundred metres from the hotel, with a tunnel, a slalom, a walkway and ten obstacles. In the hotel grounds the dog must be on a lead and stays away from the lounger areas, the pond and the pool.
